چکیده

In collaborative museum learning contexts, it is problematic that groups of museum visitors are not able able to touch, handle, and pass museum artefacts around during collaborative discussions. This can be due to the fragility of the artefacts themselves or due to the people discussing them being in different locations. Interacting with virtual representations of artefacts is a solution to the problem, but digital experiences have typically lacked many of the qualities that are so successful in engaging museum learners with physical artefacts.

RelicPad: A Hands-On, Mobile Approach to Collaborative Exploration of Virtual Museum Artifacts

In an ideal world, physical museum artefacts could be touched, handled, examined and passed between interested viewers by hand. Unfortunately, this is not always possible – artefacts may be too fragile to handle or pass around, or groups of people with mutual interests in objects may not be in the same location. This can be problematic when attempting to explain or make sense of the physical pr...

Intrigue at the Museum: Facilitating Engagement and Learning through a Location-based Mobile Game

The use of portable devices to explore informal learning environments has recently exposed museums to a mobile learning (m-learning) scenario. In particular, location-based mobile applications that take into account not only a specific physical venue, but also the personal and social context can be valuable resources to enhance the visitor experience. Game-based applications that leverage on fu...

The EPOCH Multimodal Interface for Interacting with Digital Heritage Artefacts

In recent years, 3D and virtual reality have emerged as areas of extreme interest as methods for visualizing digital museum artefacts in context, and particularly over the Internet. The technology associated with these new visualization techniques has until now been very expensive. The advent of cheap computing and graphics cards coupled with increasing Internet ‘broadband’ access has made poss...

Augmented Reality for Museum Artefact Visualization

This paper describes an experimental augmented reality based system for overlaying computer generated information on the real world. Museum artefacts are digitised; 3D models are then created and rendered in an augmented reality environment providing the opportunity for museum visitors to visualise virtual artefacts in the context of real artefacts and other contextual information. Viewing 3D m...
